Drivers are advised to expect delays in Hamakua next week as Hawaiian Electric conducts a three-day infrastructure upgrade project in Pa‘auilo.

From June 21 through 23, Highway 19 will be reduced to one lane between mile markers 37 and 38 in Pa‘auilo while Hawaiian Electric crews remove and replace 14 transmission poles along the side of the highway. Work on the project, which is intended to build resilience along the Hamakua Coast, will continue from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day.

Utility trucks will set up a staging area in the southbound lane, with flaggers guiding traffic contraflow through the northbound lane. Drivers are therefore urged to drive with caution and anticipate delays during work hours.
